The award is designed to build connections between the Business School and the greater business community by recognizing Business School faculty and staff who have engaged in activities that promote visibility and the reputation of the Business School within the business community. The award was established in 2005 by David Laube, Board of Advisor’s Chairman from 2002-2006, and executive in Residence at the Business School.

In addition to his role with the CU Denver Business School, Laube serves on the board of directors for various non-profit organizations. Laube also served as a Director at Network Equipment Technologies (NET) for eleven years, until 2011. Laube previously spent 17 years as a senior executive at U S WEST (now CenturyLink), the last five years of which he spent as Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Laube earned his BA in Finance from the University of Washington and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Colorado in 2004.

The 2012 Laube Community Award recipients include three faculty members who have volunteered their time in service to, and have promoted the reputation of the Business School. The first place winner of this year’s award is:

Dr. Jahangir Karimi, Professor and Director of Information Systems Programs.

As the director of the Information Systems programs at the CU Denver Business School, Dr. Jahangir Karimi has been responsible for organizing the annual Become a Business Leader with an Edge event held on October 23, 2012. The most recent event included panelists representing ten premier information technology organizations. Dr. Karimi is also the Program Manager for a program to expand and integrate health information technology education, which received a $2.5 million grant. Dr. Karimi earned both an MS and Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Arizona

In addition to Dr. Karimi, two other faculty members of the CU Denver Business School were named as winners of this year’s Laube Community Impact Award:

Cindy Baroway, RMI program Facilitator and Lecturer.

As the facilitator for the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program at the CU Denver Business School, Cindy Baroway has been instrumental in creating more internship, scholarship, and job placement opportunities for students, as well as increasing donations from business partners in the industry. Baroway also founded the RMI Shadow Day, an event that happens several time each year that allows students, whether in the RMI program or not, to visit companies in the industry in order to explore the industry, make connections, and learn what really is involved in a career in the RMI industry. In addition to her work creating alliances between the Business School companies in the industry, Baroway has helped the school build relationships with many prominent insurance industry associations.

Dr. Wendy Guild, Instructor and Director of Sports and Entertainment Management Programs.

As the Director of the Sports and Entertainment Management programs, Dr. Wendy Guild has built relationships between the Business School and business leaders from Colorado-based global sports and entertainment organizations. The list of organizations represented is long and impressive, and the relationships with these companies have impacted the school in many important ways. Bringing business leaders in to speak in classes, for example, has helped the Business School deliver a relevant education to students. Dr. Guild also leads the London Calling trip each May, and she has developed relationships with many of London’s most important Sports and Entertainment organizations. Dr. Guild has been with the CU Denver Business School since 2004, and she earned her B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her Ph.D. from MIT, at the Sloan School of Management.
