Business School offers many services, including boot camps and career fairs, to help students and graduates land top jobs

DENVER – Jonathan Maher, who recently earned his master’s degree in international business from the CU Denver Business School, is in the thick of a job search. He’s finding his alma mater to be quite helpful.

He attended a recent Job Search Boot Camp in the Business School along with about 30 students. The 90-minute session was led by Sue Wyman, director of the Business School’s Graduate Career Connections. Attendees received useful information about resumes, LinkedIn profiles, networking, career fairs, interviews and professional etiquette. They enjoyed pizza along with a wealth of information during the fast-paced session.

“I didn’t expect this service to be provided after graduation, so this is nice,” Maher said. “I really liked the information about resumes and interviewing. I learned some good responses to interview questions and ways to build a better resume.”

Pat Sookmark, a first-year graduate student in accounting in the Business School, is on the hunt for internships. “I was looking for the right ways to approach a recruiter or hiring manager,” she said. “This was a good session — I learned a lot.”

Wyman explained ways to make a resume stand out, some dos and don’ts on LinkedIn and the benefits of networking and attending career fairs. The recent Business School Career Fair was a huge success with about 35 employers participating.

Wyman said if students apply a few fundamental strategies — targeting potential employers, researching jobs before applying, and building relationships — it will serve them throughout their careers. The attendees also received examples of a well-formatted resume and a “Target Career/Company Worksheet” to use while searching for jobs and internships.

Upcoming Job Search Boot Camps are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Room 3007 in the Business School.

Wyman said students and alumni are always welcome to schedule a one-on-one meeting about career search strategies. For information call Graduate Career Connections at 303-315-8900 or go to www.business.ucdenver.edu/GCC.
