Over 165 graduate and undergraduate students gathered from across the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses to compete at this year’s annual Research and Creative Activities Symposium. The Symposium showcases the research, creative and entrepreneurial activities of students on the Denver Campus and Anschutz Medical Campus.

One student making waves at this year’s symposium was Zach Kloska, a junior obtaining his degree in accounting and financial management.  Kloska was one of 10 students selected to win an award at the Symposium, he stated, “presenting at RaCAS was an amazing opportunity for my research to be recognized in an expanded experience beyond the classroom.”

Zach did research under the guidance of Dr. Yosef Bonaparte, Assistant Professor of Finance and founder of the CU Denver Portfolio Management organization, to develop the G-R Indexing Algorithm, a method used to evaluate and rank equity stocks.  “Without the mentorship of Dr. Bonaparte, this research would not have been possible,” said Zach. This algorithm was originally intended for stocks, but recently has been successfully used in the sports field to predict matchups as in NCAA Basketball.

Kloska identified a problem in the current way stocks are evaluated which overlook many of the undervalued stocks that appear insignificant in the preliminary assessment.  With Zach’s take on G-R Indexing Algorithm, many hidden investment opportunities can be discovered through utilizing multiple metrics such as financial analyst recommendations and financial ratios.

The ultimate goal of Zach’s research is to save time and increase accuracy of finding undervalued securities – and since investors could identify with a click of a button superior stocks that would have otherwise been overlooked, Kloska is well on his way to achieving that goal.
