For his outstanding contributions to CU Denver Business School and the Risk Management and Insurance program, Troy D. Sibelius, FASLA, CIC, CRM, has been recognized with the Business School’s Community Engagement Award and the RMI program’s Above & Beyond Award.
“Troy’s leadership at Buckner and as Chair of the Surplus Lines Association of Colorado has made a lasting impact on the RMI Program. From securing student scholarships to helping raise $1,000,000 for our Global Risk Management course, his commitment is truly exceptional. He is honored with the ‘RMI Above & Beyond Award’ for his partnership, generosity, and servant leadership.” – Cindy Baroway, CPCU, M.Ed, AIC
Born and raised in Colorado, Sibelius kept his higher education local. He initiated his education in environmental studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture, beginning his design career with a local Urban Design firm. Sibelius made the swap from design to commercial insurance after his father encouraged him to join his independent insurance agency back in 1996. He soon found gaps in the average insurer’s knowledge of landscape architecture, and Sibelius used his unique background to help the industry better understand landscape architecture exposures and thus created a go-to insurance niche to get started in the industry. He remained so engaged with the landscape architecture community that in 2010, he was awarded as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects for his service to the profession. In 2021, he received the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado (PIIAC) Insurance Person of the Year Award.
This wasn’t the only time having a varied skill set benefited Sibelius. In 2012, he joined the board of the Surplus Lines of Colorado Association, which valued his unique perspective as a retail broker. Surplus Lines has maintained a strong relationship with the RMI program at CU Denver since its inception, and helped fund and develop the Global Risk Management course, which Sibelius now co-teaches. The course travels to London, giving students unique access to the industry.
“[The course] has been a huge success. It’s eye-opening for students to learn how insurance started, and London is a major hub for insurance carriers and large international insurance brokers, so we set up many appointments to meet with these companies. It’s an amazing opportunity to introduce these students not only to the retail side of insurance, but also to the wholesale brokerage side. It’s amazing to me that once they attend this class, they realize there is another piece of the insurance world that most people don’t know about.”
Sibelius is also active in the landscape contractor community and is on the board for the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC). He has received two awards from this organization, one recognizing his volunteer work and the 2020 John Garvey Person of the Year Award.
Outside of work, Sibelius shares interests with many other native Coloradans: hiking, skiing, fishing, and spending time with family in the mountains. CU Denver Business School is proud to partner with community members like Troy Sibelius, who use their knowledge and experience to advance the next generation of professionals who use business as a force for good.
