One of the greatest assets a university can have is an active and supportive alumni community. The CU Denver Business School is proud to boast a network of over 29,000 alumni. One alumnus, Kaitlin LaFlamme, MBA ’20, inspires through her unparalleled commitment to giving back to her community.
LaFlamme earned her undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Colorado Boulder but yearned for a more tailored experience. Whether it was the pressures she faced working while in school or the expectations faced by young adults attending college, her undergraduate experience wasn’t what she wanted it to be.
LaFlamme geared her MBA journey toward a more cultivated experience than her undergraduate education. She deliberated in selecting opportunities that she felt best aligned with her goals. She ventured out on several Ethics on Site trips through the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative, served as a dean’s student advisory council member, and explored entrepreneurship on the first study abroad trip to Barcelona. Earning her master’s is a badge of honor that LaFlamme proudly bears.
Between her junior and senior years of college, LaFlamme landed an internship, which turned into a part-time job, and then full-time employment after graduating. Although her work was loosely based in finance, she primarily worked outside that area. After five years at the company, she began branching into the oil and gas field, exploring various roles and opportunities. However, LaFlamme decided to dip her toes back into the financial field after a Christmas-time layoff. She took employment at Dish Network, which took her out of her beloved city environment but allowed her to reconnect with her love of finance.
LaFlamme currently works at Marathon Petroleum and has found her way back to what initially piqued her interest: financial analysis and the hustle and bustle of the city. “Everything feels like it’s come full circle; everything was leading up to this.”
When not at work, LaFlamme follows her lifelong passion of volunteering. She found this love at 12 when she spent her free time volunteering at the local library. Nowadays, she serves on the board of Wish of a Lifetime, and also gives back to her alma mater. Not only has LaFlamme provided valuable guidance to students as a mentor, but she is also an active member of the Business School Alumni Network (BSAN). She encourages her fellow alumni to get involved and experience the transformative power that BSAN has for its members and current students. “It’s very rewarding to share your experiences with someone.”
