Did you know that undergraduate students who graduate with a business degree start with a median salary in the mid $40,000 range? In the next few years, the financial services industry in Denver will grow significantly. Financial companies have provided 100% tuition funding for CU Denver students to take this Summer 2015 course, so for a limited time it is free.

In February a consortium of leading financial services companies partnered with the CU Denver Business School and the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation (MDEDC). The partnership was established to develop future talent for the quickly growing financial services industry.

The six companies, MDEDC, and CU Denver Business School developed a class, Introduction to Investment Service Careers, which will launch this summer and also is anticipated to happen in Spring 2016.  In addition, the class is free to all undergraduate students at CU Denver. “These companies hire students from a variety of disciplines, not just Business School students,” said Associate Dean of Programs Dawn Gregg, PhD, MS, MBA.

The class will take place over an eight week time period, beginning June 8, on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 – 2:30 PM and cover financial roles, products, career paths, communications, and processes within the industry.  Students will listen to guest speakers each week, as well as take a site visit to one of the consortium partners’ facilities. As Gregg stated, “Students will get a clear understanding of basic financial service skills, terminology and career paths. It’s a terrific opportunity for them.”

In the next few years, Denver is expected to become a central hub of the financial services industry.  For instance, Charles Schwab & Co., is expected to build a 47-acre campus in Lone Tree that will employ 4,000 workers.  In addition, the need for employees in the financial services industry is projected to increase as the baby boomer generation moves into retirement.

The class was able to be free thanks to contributions from partners in the Colorado Investment Services Coalition (CISC). The partners who aided in the development of the class include Charles Schwab & Co., Fidelity Investments, Janus Capital Group, OppenheimerFunds, T. Rowe Price, TIAA-CREF and MDEDC.
