Nestled between Mexico’s southern peninsula and Guatemala and located on the eastern coast of Central America lies Belize. The country is renowned for its natural beauty and vibrant culture. Belize also is the site for one of four exciting study abroad Maymester opportunities.
Up to 14 graduate and undergraduate students at the CU Denver Business School will travel to the country’s capital city, Punta Gorda this spring. Through service learning projects, they will use their background business knowledge to directly contribute to the economic growth and development of Belize. These projects will be completed at NGOs and local small businesses. This hands-on learning method merges meaningful community service with instruction, providing students with the unique experience of aiding in the education and betterment of the country’s people, while honing business skills in their respective areas of interest.
As Ron Ramirez, Professor of Information Systems and the trip’s faculty leader explained, “The service learning projects will focus on providing Belize organizations with business-related skills and resources that are not available currently, either due to educational shortfalls or resource constraints. All areas of business are needed and the projects will include the development of business and marketing plans, databases and websites, new business strategies, and new product and service development for future revenue growth. Through the completion of the study abroad course, students will gain real-world business and consulting experience that will serve to help both themselves and the global community.”
In addition to an enriching academic experience, participants will also venture around the country to visit cultural landmarks such as the Mayan ruins and Belize Barrier Reef. They will also experience the pristine beaches and tropical forests that compose the country’s lush landscape.
