At the CU Denver Business School, diversity is more than a value — it’s present in every aspect of the university experience. This deep commitment to inclusivity and representation drew Shannon Jones ’00 to the campus. Reflecting on her time at the CU Denver Business School, Jones recalled how the university provided an environment where people from various walks of life could come together to learn and grow.

“CU Denver is not just diverse in race but also in age, social, and economic factors,” Jones shared. For Jones, this diversity was not just a passive observation but an essential part of her journey to becoming a successful leader. Interacting with classmates and professors with varied life experiences gave her insights that prepared her to lead inclusively and foster connections across communities in her professional career.

Jones’ career is a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose. She began her professional journey as an intern at FirstBank, working part-time while pursuing her degree at the Business School. For nearly 28 years, she rose through the ranks, participating in the bank’s management program and eventually serving as president of the Aurora market. In that role, she led 130 employees and managed 10 branch locations. Her journey culminated when she took a leap of faith and applied for the Chief People Officer role, transitioning from the retail side of banking to a corporate leadership position.

Despite the changes in her titles and responsibilities, one thing remained constant: Jones’ passion for people.

A Colorado native and proud mother of two daughters, Jones encountered some challenges, especially balancing her career and family life. “I had to realign my priorities and learn to be present in the moment,” she explained. While she acknowledged that she couldn’t change the past, she is dedicated to “being better today and tomorrow.” Jones emphasized the importance of prioritizing as she juggles many responsibilities, a lesson she hopes to pass on to others.

As a trailblazer, Jones made history as FirstBank’s first Black market president and Black C-suite executive. She is one of two persons of color and one of three women in the C-suite.

Jones is passionate about giving back to the community and increasing diversity in the financial industry, particularly within Black and African American communities. She has spearheaded resource groups and outreach initiatives to meet the unique needs of diverse customers.

Jones’  story inspires many, demonstrating how hard work, resilience, and a focus on people can propel one to remarkable success. She advised current students and recent graduates to take dedicated time to understand who they are. “Identify your strengths and areas of opportunity,” she encouraged. “Focus on growth, prioritize your responsibilities, and respect people for who they are.”

Shannon Jones is shaping a brighter future for the financial industry and her community through her leadership and commitment to diversity.
