  • Study Examines Why Organizations Repeat Big Mistakes

    On the 30th anniversary of the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, recent research examines why large organizations as diverse as NASA and BP have a tendency to make the same mistakes again and again, sometimes with serious and far-reaching consequences. The study, written by Assistant Professor of Management David Chandler of the University of Colorado Denver Business School, together with Professor Emeritus Pamela Haunschild and Associate Professor Francisco Polidoro of the McCombs School at the University of Texas at Austin, was published in December in the journal Organization Science.  Read more

  • Boulder County Rigs Still Pumping, But Price Decline Projected to Last Into 2017

    The recent drop in oil costs are benefiting the consumer now, but will eventually cost others jobs, including right here at home. In December of 2014 oil was trading at $107 a barrel. Today it hovers around $30. As a result of that free-fall, the value of Colorado’s oil production dropped by more than 34 percent, hitting $5.4 billion last year, down from $8.2 billion in 2014.  Read more

    The Director of Finance and Risk Management at the CU Denver Business School Professor Jian Yang is an authority in the Finance world here at CU Denver and abroad. Yang was recently featured in China Daily to talk about stocks slumping across the world precipitated by heavy selling in China as officials in the mainland pulled the plug on a mechanism designed to limit chaotic market activity.  Read more

    Finance Professor Jian Yang carries with him many achievements and distinctions. The Director of Finance and Risk Management at the CU Denver Business School has been recognized countless times in the past, including being ranked as one of the 15 commodity friendly professors in the world and among the top 750 (top 4%) most prolific authors in finance worldwide based on the number of publications in 26 core finance journals over the 50 years from 1959 to 2008.  Read more

  • Why the Flat Tax Is More Popular Than Ever

    More progressivity means more progress. Especially after 2008. That’s the Democratic tax philosophy seven autumns after the financial crisis. Voters are still frustrated by the arbitrary quality of the rescues and the uneven quality of the recovery. So Hillary Clinton proposes increases in capital-gains-tax rates for top earners. Clinton’s former fellow candidate Lincoln Chafee offered to raise the top marginal income tax rate to 45% from the current 39.6%.  Read more

    Director of Accounting and Associate Professor, Michael Roberts, is no stranger to accounting for taxes.  In fact, he’s quite the expert.  That’s why WalletHub – a “social network for your wallet” – asked him for his opinion for the article, 2015’s Best States to Be Rich or Poor from a Tax Perspective.  The article “identified the best states where people in different income brackets spend the most and least on sales and excise taxes, property taxes and income taxes.”  Read more

    Sarah Knight is an adjunct professor teaching in the Graduate Tax Program. She has over 20 years of experience providing tax consulting, compliance and litigation support services to closely held businesses, individuals and non‐profits.
